Despite an 8-0 win over Gothenburg in their final group fixture, Tîm Rhanbarthol Cymru exited the UEFA Regions’ Cup at the intermediate round stage.

Guy Handscombe’s side – made up of players who have never played in the JD Cymru Premier and never been a professional – had to top their four-team group in Northern Ireland to progress to the final tournament.

They made a dramatic start to the group stage as Colwyn Bay’s Dylan Allshorn scored an 87th-minute winner to secure a 3-2 victory over Northern Ireland’s Eastern Region. Centre-back pair Cai Powell Roberts and Chris Cathrall had also found the net in the first half after the side went behind in the ninth minute.

The second group game was another entertaining encounter but this time Tîm Rhanbarthol Cymru were on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline against Zlín of the Czech Republic.

Handscombe’s team again conceded the first goal but led 2-1 thanks to a brace from CPD Porthmadog forward Rhys Alun Williams. However, two goals in four second-half minutes for the Czech side turned the game around.

Handscombe’s side put on a show in their final group fixture as they thrashed Sweden’s Gothenburg 8-0. Sam Downey and Williams both scored twice, while Jamie Hyne, Allshorn and Callum Parry also netted after a Lennon Landström own goal put them in front early on.

But Zlin’s 1-1 draw with Eastern Region meant that Tîm Rhanbarthol Cymru finished second in the group with six points as they bowed out with their heads held high.
