A new season of the JD Cymru Premier gets underway this coming weekend as Connah’s Quay Nomads begin their title defence at Cefn Druids on Friday (13 August).
Whilst the format of the JD Cymru Premier remains the same with the mid-season split into the championship and play-off conferences, there is a change to European and Scottish Challenge Cup qualification.
From the 2022/23 season, Wales will have three representatives in UEFA club competitions:
- JD Cymru Premier Champions will qualify for the UEFA Champions League
- JD Cymru Premier Runners-up will qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League
- JD Welsh Cup winners will qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League
Despite losing the fourth European place for the 2022/23 season, the FAW’s National Leagues Board has decided to keep the current format of the JD Cymru Premier to further improve playing standards, maintaining competitive football for all clubs over the course of the season.
Clubs finishing in third to seventh position will continue to participate in the end of season Play-Offs with the winners joining the JD Cymru Premier champions as the Welsh representatives in the cross-border Scottish Challenge Cup for the 2022/23 season.
Wales can regain its fourth European place should performances of participant clubs in Europe improve the UEFA club competition coefficient ranking.
